Richmond Low Line Green

An extension of the transformative Low Line linear botanical garden along the Virginia Capital Trail that was completed in 2016, the Low Line Green will reclaim an underutilized site below Interstate-95, an elevated CSX Railroad trestle, and nestled between the James River Floodwall and the historic Kanawha Canal.

The project which has been spearheaded by the non-profit group Capital Trees, will provide a large lawn space for events and an enhanced plaza that serves as a trailhead for the Capital Trail. Runoff from the highway overhead will be captured and treated in a vegetated biofilter full of native pollinator-friendly plants. Reclaimed granite canal stones will provide site structure and informal seating opportunities while recalling the memories of the site’s history as an industrial and transportation hub in the 18th & 19th centuries.
