This unique residential landscape design project centers on the transformation of a historic home and garden, reimagined in collaboration with the talented local architecture firm, DGP Architects and constructed by GME Contracting. The elevated home site with views to the Southwest Mountains, a perennial creek, historic barns, and outbuildings was sensitively edited and transformed to blend history, natural beauty, and the needs of a social client who frequently hosts events. A functional yet disruptive farm road was rerouted to increase tranquil garden spaces around the home, and a new path network was designed to enhance connectivity between existing doors and an existing garage.
A focal point of the design is the ancient willow oak tree around which the entire landscape is thoughtfully crafted. The tree serves as both a historical anchor and a living symbol of the property’s connection to the land. The landscape surrounding it includes extensive new and existing gardens, lawns, and mixed tree planting, each carefully curated to enhance the natural beauty while providing spaces for social gatherings and intimate moments alike.
The design also embraces sustainability and ecological restoration. Former cattle pastures are transformed into vibrant pollinator meadows, supporting local biodiversity and providing habitat for bees, butterflies, and other essential pollinators. The introduction of bee hives and honey production not only enhances the working landscape but also connects the client with the land’s agricultural heritage.
Meadow restoration and invasive species removal are integral to the project, ensuring that the landscape thrives and contributes positively to the local environment. Farm animals like goats, donkeys, and chickens are integrated into the landscape, reflecting the property’s roots as a working farm while adding a layer of authenticity to the design.
In collaboration with a very talented architect and contractor, the team also created a long-term master plan that envisions the future expansion of the gardens and orchards. This master plan ensures that the property can continue to evolve and grow, accommodating future needs and desires while preserving its historical integrity and natural beauty.
The result is a landscape that honors the past, embraces the present, and thoughtfully plans for the future, offering a serene and sustainable retreat for the client and their guests.
