Riverside Village brings homes, workplaces, shops, and community spaces together within a walkable neighborhood overlooking the Rivanna River. Waterstreet’s work focused on the landscape between these uses—creating the connective framework and shared spaces that allow the development to function as a community rather than a collection of individual buildings.

Working within an established development, Waterstreet created a sequence of outdoor rooms, pedestrian connections, seating areas, and informal gathering spaces that extend activity beyond the buildings and into the landscape. Site walls, terraces, planting, and furnishings give definition and character to these spaces while accommodating the changing scale and needs of residents, employees, businesses, and visitors.

The landscape also helps Riverside Village transition naturally to the surrounding residential neighborhood and its larger setting. A restrained palette of native and adapted plantings reinforces the character of the place while reducing maintenance, and pedestrian connections strengthen walkability within the development and toward the nearby Rivanna River trail system.

At Riverside Village, the landscape is the connective tissue of the mixed-use community—linking buildings and uses, creating places for everyday interaction, and giving the development a shared identity and sense of place.
