Oakencroft Farm & Winery is a 250-acre regenerative farm, vineyard, winery, and event destination in Albemarle County that represents a new model for the relationship between agriculture, conservation, hospitality, and community. Originally part of Virginia’s early wine-growing history, the property was thoughtfully reimagined under the stewardship of the Dorothy N. Batten Foundation as a living landscape that demonstrates the principles of regenerative agriculture, biodiversity, carbon sequestration, renewable energy, and ecological stewardship. More than a winery or event venue, Oakencroft is, today, a place where farming, research, education, and hospitality are intentionally integrated to create a resilient and productive landscape for future generations.

Waterstreet Studio served as the Landscape Architect from initial master planning through implementation, working closely with the owner, architects, engineers, agricultural consultants, and builders to translate the project’s mission into a cohesive site framework. Beginning with the master plan, Waterstreet helped define the organization and character of the property, establishing relationships between agricultural fields, vineyards, natural systems, hospitality spaces, event areas, and future development opportunities. Our work included the design of arrival experiences, circulation systems, gardens, outdoor gathering spaces, winery and conference center landscapes, and the integration of sustainable site strategies including renewable energy systems, water management infrastructure, and regenerative agricultural practices. Throughout the project, every landscape decision—from landform and grading to material selection, planting, and site detailing—was guided by the owner’s vision of creating a place that restores both land and people. The resulting landscape carefully balances the functional needs of a working farm with the experiential qualities of a destination, allowing visitors to engage with the processes of agriculture, ecology, and stewardship.
