Richmond Residence
Located in the Resource Protection Area buffer adjacent to the James River, this project sensitively reconfigured an outdoor living room and garden to work better around an existing pool that forms the heart of a fun-loving family’s backyard. Rainwater runoff on this sloping site is collected and slowly infiltrated back into the ground via a biofilter brimming with native plants. The steeply sloping grade, coupled with runoff from an adjacent parcel required a creative approach to the design of a new maintenance pathway that became an amenity in its own right.
A custom outdoor fireplace extends the comfort of being outside in the cooler seasons, and new retaining walls and pathways maximize the usable areas while seamlessly complimenting the building architecture with a new stone material palette. Native plant gardens invite pollinators and wildlife into the site for food & forage, framing the edges of a central play lawn, and evergreen screening provides privacy from the neighbors in this oasis in the City.
